Ξεχωριστή μέρα αποτελεί η 6η Φεβρουαρίου για την οικογένεια της Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ, την ποδοσφαιρική Αγγλία αλλά και για ολόκληρο τον κόσμο.
Εκείνη η μέρα (6 Φεβρουαρίου 1958) έμελλε να είναι η τελευταία για μερικά από τα τρομερά «μωρά» του Σερ Ματ Μπάσμπι αλλά και η αρχή μιας νέας εποχής για το καμάρι του Μάντσεστερ, τη Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ.Λίγους μήνες μετά το τραγικό ατύχημα στο Μόναχο (Οκτώβριος 1958) το τραγούδι με τίτλο “the Flowers of Manchester” εστάλη ανώνυμα στο φολκλορικό περιοδικό «Sing». Το τραγούδι περιείχε μόνο τους στίχους και ήταν χωρίς νότες. Απλά υπήρχε μια σημείωση ότι το τραγούδι είχε το ρυθμό του “High Germany”.Το «The Flowers of Manchester» τελικά τραγούδησε το συγκρότημα “Spinners” ενώ σύμφωνα με μαρτυρίες το τραγούδι προκάλεσε ρίγη συγκίνησης σε όσους το άκουσαν ζωντανά ένα βράδυ σε κάποιο κλαμπ του Λίβερπουλ. Όπως δήλωσε ο Μικ Γκρόουβς (τραγουδιστής του συγκροτήματος και οπαδός της Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ) υπήρξε και μια ιδιαίτερη στιγμή «Η πιο περήφανη στιγμή ήταν η βραδιά που το σιγοτραγούδησα σε μια γωνιά στον Σερ Ματ και στον Λούις Εντουαρτς».Για πολλά χρόνια ο στιχουργός του τραγουδιού παρέμενε άγνωστος μέχρι που τελικά ο Τόνι Ντέιβις των “Spinners” αποκάλυψε σε ένα φεστιβάλ τζαζ στην Ιταλία ότι το τραγούδι είχε γράψει ο Έρικ Γουίντερ, ο εκδότης του περιοδικού “Sing”. Ηταν συνήθεια της εποχής να αποστέλλονται τραγούδια ανώνυμα καθώς έτσι δημιουργούνταν μια περίεργη ατμόσφαιρα γύρω από το τραγούδι.
